Discussion: Humility

What are some things you do regularly?

Why do you do these things?

How many things do you do because you have to?

How many things do you do because you want to?

Is it often that any of us make time to benefit others primarily?

How hard is it to squeeze in a weekend road trip with friends, versus helping a disabled person you don’t know move to a new apartment?

Is it wrong to think of yourself?

Humble people don’t hate themselves. They don’t praise themselves. They are not preoccupied with what others think about them. They give of themselves to promote others, and depend on God for their sense of value and purpose.

I find it easier to be creative to find solutions to get things done that I look forward to, rather than things I don’t. Do you agree? I am selfish naturally, that is why I need all the more to be intentional about my efforts towards others, and ask God to help me to want to act with greater love like He does. Some people love helping others, but even they lose some enthusiasm when their efforts are not recognized. Only God can give us the unconditional love He has which can empower us to acheive great things that make difference on this earth and in heaven. All our own efforts without him will not last that long.

Phillipians 2:3-4
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Think About:
What am I planning on doing out of selfish ambition?

Am I looking at careers based on money alone? Or power? Status? Prestige? Popularity?

Am I doing anything in vain conceit?

What are your best assets? Do you show them off, by comparing yourself with the lesser gifted?

God says we should not do that. We should not be ashamed of our gifts, rather thank God for them, and be a help to others, doing good with what He has given us.

Summary:
Don’t be your own fan. (Proud)
Don’t put yourself/others down (Judgemental)
Be someone else’s fan (encourager)
Be forward thinking (forgiving)
