Discussion: Stubbornness

When is stubbornness wrong?

At what time is it right to be stubborn (if any)?

Can you describe a better way to avoid having to be stubborn?

How do you find compromise that works well?

What works for you?

"Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent.
He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus"
-Mark 3:4-6

The Pharisees were stubborn and were led to think of harming Jesus due to their jealosy and contempt for His unorthodox manner of doing things. Have you been stubborn? Have you entertained thoughts of harming someone? Is it easy to be stubborn with someone else who does not do things as we expect they should be done?

Here are some questions to ask yourself about one you perceive as stubborn:

1. What is their goal? What is my goal?

2. Why won't they compromise? Why won't I compromise?

3. Why can't I communicate effectively with them? Do I not listen, or am I not sharing respectfully?

What happens if both you and another are stubborn and wrong in some way? Is there a resolution? Is it ever unwise to compromise? When?
