Discussion: Law

What is the purpose of law?

Do laws vary in different places? Why?

What are some consequences of breaking the law?

What does the Bible mean when it talks about God’s law?

Do you think that the laws God has put in place are easy or natural to follow?

What are some that you struggle with most?

If God’s law and human nature conflict, how can we do what’s right?

(NIV) Romans 7:21-25
So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. [22] For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; [23] but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. [24] What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? [25] Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

God recognizes the difficulty we have and the conflict we face in obeying what he commands. He knows it is a challenge. But if we choose to deny Him and do what we want, what feels good, we are not protected by the law he put in place to protect us.

Why do most parents have rules?

It’s because they love us. They want us to be safe. God didn’t set boundaries to be a life ruiner, but to be a life giver. Those laws may seem like restrictions, but if you look around and see the consequences attached to breaking away from them-you might see how freeing they really are.
