Discussion: Words

Have you ever heard the phrase "sticks and stones…"?

What does that mean?

Do you believe that is true?

When you were little, did you ever wish your parents would just spank you and skip the lecture?

Why?

Proverbs 12:18 says," Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

What are reckless words?

Sometimes, especially in a group of friends, people make fun of each other or kid around. Usually what is said in those situations are not meant to be taken seriously- but it can still hurt. Do you think about how you joke around with your friends? You might think that your words aren't serious, and people need to lighten up- but have you considered that YOU might be the problem? Words are not to be thrown around lightly- we have a responsibility. Do you want to be known as somebody who is encouraging and fun to be around, or someone who tears people apart?

Matthew 5:37 says, " Simply let your yes be yes and your no, no; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

A lot of times we think of this verse as simply referring to our commitments- but what about the words that come out of our mouth? It says that what we say is what we should mean. Are you guilty of joking around harshly, or in such a way that hurts somebody? Did you mean it? And, even if you did, should you have said it? Was it in love? Your words reflect your heart. What do your words say about whats in your heart?
